Mauritius is a major tourist destination. Mauritius basks in splendid isolation in the bosom of the warmest ocean of all, the Indian Ocean. Within its 720 square miles there are more than 1,000 miles of good roads lined with bougainvillea and flame trees, wild waterfalls, rainbows and shooting stars, villages hidden in lush coastal vegetation, plateau towns with charming old colonial houses, flowers and trees growing out of the red earth in a riot of colour and everywhere the green and golden mantle of sugar cane. You must not miss the Chamarel, an undulating landscape of different and contrasting shades of colours. The different shades of blue, green, red and yellow are apparently the result of the erosion of the volcanic ash. Casela, the bird park stretches over 25 hectares and contains more than 140 bird species from all five continents. Other attractions include fish ponds, tigers, tortoises, and orchid. Grand Bay was the first area of the island to fully experience the tourist boom. Also don't miss the black dolphins, which you can sight at the Mauritian coast. Entry permit on arrival is provided free of cost.
